If you haven't tasted the greatness that is EWA AGOYIN aka EWA-G, you are in for a treat when you do.
According to connectnigeria.com" 'Agoyin', which is an ethnic group in Benin Republic. One can, therefore, safely say that ewa Agoyin is a type of beans prepared by people of Beninese origin. This beans meal made its first debut into Nigeria in the 1960s".
Whatever the case is, Ewa Agoyin is made and sold all over Lagos where I currently live and everyone loves it!
Growing up in Northern Nigeria this was not a dish I was exposed to at all, in fact the first time I tasted Ewa Agoyin was in 2005, we had moved from Zaria to Lagos and I was now in Snr Secondary Sch. In school, we had different food vendors and one of them was the 'beans and bread woman' like we popularly called her. There would be a long line of students at her stall when it was break time all waiting for their share of the delicious beans and bread. She sold it like a burger meal, she would make a hole bread and put 2 scoops of the soft mashed beans and one scoop of the spicy and grainy Agoyin sauce and I always thought to myself what in the world does she use to make this deliciousness?
It was too good to only be pepper and onion, which I only found out a few years ago. After a little bit of research, trial and error I've made my perfect recipe in the video below. You have to try it, but you must bare in mind that this sauce is a labor of love and I truly believe that is what makes Agoyin sauce what it is. It takes a lot of time and patience to fry this sauce to perfection, once you get there it will all be worth it.
It took me about 2.5 to 3 hrs. to fry this sauce which is why I make a big batch, freeze in containers and use as needed. This can be eaten not only with mashed beans but anything your heart so desires from boiled yams to potatoes to rice or bread, but of course mashed beans is the perfect delivery system to the land of perfection.
Did I also mention that I made the bread rolls that was paired with my perfect Ewa Agoyin, see the recipe video here
